About the Expert

Expert Bio

Hirah Azhar is head of the Middle East Programme at CGSRS. She focuses on Middle Eastern affairs. Previously, she worked as a journalist and editor for a daily English newspaper in Saudi Arabia as well as a blog editor for the LSE’s foreign policy think tank IDEAS. Research interests include: securitisation, regional cooperation and conflict resolution in the MENA region; political Islam and terrorism in the Middle East and Afghanistan/Pakistan; the Euro-Mediterranean regional security complex and the privatisation of security and military operations.

Hirah has a BA in History and Economics from the University of York, United Kingdom, and an MSc in Theory and History of International Relations from the London School of Economics, United Kingdom. She speaks fluent English and Urdu and has a good working knowledge of Arabic and French.
