Global Programme

CGSRS monitors yearly global shifts in power.

The Global Programme at CGSRS is dedicated to examining a wide array of issues impacting international politics and global affairs. Our research spans topics that not only affect individual states or regions, but also influence the global community as a whole. With a focus on security, diplomacy, and global governance, the programme seeks to offer comprehensive insights into the complex dynamics shaping world politics today. The programme also focuses on the security and foreign policies of Russia as well as of the other states of post-Soviet republics. Russia is still politically, diplomatically and militarily important in world politics.

Key Areas of Focus

The Global Programme examines a number of key issues with far-reaching consequences, particularly in the realms of security and foreign policy:

Russia and the Post-Soviet States

Despite the geopolitical shifts in recent decades, Russia remains a dominant force in world politics—politically, diplomatically, and militarily. As a major player in global security dynamics, Russia’s actions have far-reaching effects on its neighbors and the broader international community. In particular, the programme focuses on the security and foreign policies of Russia and its influence over post-Soviet republics, including Ukraine, Georgia, and Belarus.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Russia’s Strategic Interests: Understanding Russia’s foreign policy strategies in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
  • The Ukraine Conflict: The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and its global repercussions, particularly on European security.
  • Russia-NATO Relations: The complex and often contentious relationship between Russia and NATO, including military buildup, cybersecurity threats, and military diplomacy.
  • Post-Soviet Dynamics: Analyzing Russia’s influence over former Soviet states and the challenges they face in balancing independence with regional power pressures.

The USA: A Global Power in Transition

The United States continues to be a global leader, influencing international relations, security, and economic policies. However, the evolving dynamics of global power, coupled with internal challenges, have reshaped its approach to foreign policy and global governance. Our focus is on understanding the U.S. foreign policy, its evolving relationships with other world powers, and its strategic responses to global crises.

Key areas of focus include:

  • U.S.-China Rivalry: Analyzing the growing competition between the U.S. and China in areas such as trade, technology, military influence, and global leadership.
  • U.S.-Russia Relations: The ongoing tension between the U.S. and Russia, particularly in the context of cybersecurity, military posturing, and the global power balance.
  • U.S. Role in Global Security: The U.S.'s military and diplomatic engagements around the world, including its strategies in the Middle East, Africa, and the Asia-Pacific region.
  • America’s Shift to Multilateralism: Evaluating the re-emergence of multilateral diplomacy under recent U.S. administrations and its implications for international cooperation.

China: The Rise of a Global Power

China has rapidly ascended to become one of the most influential powers in global politics. Its economic growth, military modernization, and expanding global influence are reshaping the geopolitical landscape. As China seeks to assert itself as a global power, its foreign policies and strategic initiatives play a critical role in the future of international relations.

Key areas of focus include:

  • The Belt and Road Initiative: Analyzing China's ambitious global infrastructure project and its implications for geopolitics and economic power.
  • South China Sea Disputes: Examining China's territorial claims and military buildup in the South China Sea, and its impact on regional security.
  • U.S.-China Trade and Technology Rivalry: Investigating the economic and technological competition between China and the U.S., with a focus on trade wars, intellectual property, and innovation.
  • China's Regional Influence: Understanding China's strategic relationships in Asia, particularly with neighboring countries like India, Japan, and North Korea.

Global Security and Power Dynamics

As global power shifts in response to rising economic, military, and technological influences, understanding the broader security environment is essential. The Global Programme closely examines emerging threats—such as cyber warfare, terrorism, nuclear proliferation, and geopolitical competition—and their impact on international order.

Key areas of focus include:

  • Cybersecurity and Information Warfare: The growing threat of cyber-attacks and disinformation campaigns by state and non-state actors, influencing democratic processes and global stability.
  • Global Power Shifts: Analyzing the rise of China, the resurgence of Russia, and the evolving role of the U.S. in shaping the future balance of power.
  • International Institutions and Governance: Evaluating the role of institutions like the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, and emerging frameworks in addressing global challenges such as climate change, health security, and economic inequality.

Why It Matters Today

In today’s world, global politics is defined by complex interdependencies and escalating tensions between world powers. The growing competition between the U.S., China, and Russia, as well as regional issues such as global security, trade wars, and geopolitical rivalries, are reshaping the balance of power. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for navigating the challenges of an increasingly multipolar world.

Through the Global Programme, CGSRS aims to provide crucial analysis on the geopolitical trends influencing both regional and global affairs. Our work contributes to better understanding the drivers behind major international issues, from power struggles to emerging alliances, and equips policymakers, scholars, and professionals with the tools to navigate today’s complex geopolitical landscape.
